SYNOPSIS:
TOKUBEI, employee at the soy sauce maker named HIRANOYA in Osaka, is deeply in love with OHATSU, prostitute at the house of TEMMAYA. However, his employer and uncle KYUEMON wants him to marry the niece of KYUEMON’s wife and bribes his stepmother OSAI with money to pressure him into such marriage. Finding out the bribery, TOKUBEI takes the money back from his stepmother to return to KYUEMON. On his way to KYUEMON, he runs into his friend KUHEIJI and happens to learn about KUHEIJIA’s desperate need of money. TOKUBEI lends the money to KUHEJI there. On a repayment due date, however, KUHEIJI not only refuses to return the money to TOKUBEI, but also dissembles that he has never borrowed money from TOKUBEI.
