SYNOPSIS:

Toshiko is living with her family in a downtown area of Tokyo. Her father along with the help of her two brothers, run a glass-making factory. Her father makes a glass rabbit ornament which Toshiko treasures. Toshiko’s two brothers, Tsuneo and Yukio enlist in the army and Toshiko’s mother suffers a heart attack shortly afterwards. Toshiko also learns that Tsuneo was adopted into the family and is actually her cousin. Under the World War II, conditions in Tokyo begin to worsen as food, clothing and other materials became less available. Toshiko and her two younger sisters are evacuated to the countryside where Toshiko makes many friends. Her two younger sisters miss their mother and run back to Tokyo. But in the night of March 10th, 1945 Toshiko loses her mother and younger sisters when they are killed in the air raid bombing of Tokyo. Toshiko’s father survives and they make plans to open a new factory outside of Tokyo. All that is left of their home is a safe and the glass rabbit that was partially melted in the fires. As they are preparing to board the train, Toshiko’s father is killed by US airplanes when they attack the train station. Toshiko is left on her own with no family. She loses the hope to live but realize that if she were to die there would be no one to remember her family. She preserves to live for them.
