Two Malaysians are set to make a splash in the Japanese dance scene as they join the revival of A City Without Seasons at AI·Hall on 18?19 March and Setagaya Public Theatre on 24?26 March.
Fauzi Amirudin and Jabar Laura were invited by the renowned Co. Un Yamada to be members of the ensemble presenting the piece, which originally premiered in 2012. The vivid tragicomedy unfolds a narrative inspired by Shugoro Yamamoto?s literary work of the same name to the sublime grandeur of Beethoven?s Symphony No. 9.
The performance is the latest in a long-standing relationship between Malaysia and the Japanese troupe?s namesake founder, Un Yamada.
She made her first foray here in 2012 to participate in feminism-themed dance project Work It!,and has returned every year since. In 2013, she was part of the artist line-up at the ASWARA?s annual dance festival Tari before being reinvited by the national arts academy in 2014 to deliver a three-week physical theatre course. 2015 saw her conduct a series of auditions, which resulted in five local male professionals participating in a double bill of her two most celebrated productions in Kuala Lumpur in 2016.
