The Asian Youth Jazz Orchestra, featuring 28 outstanding young musicians from across the region, will come together for a one-night-only performance at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas on 7 October.
Members of the inaugural ensemble will demonstrate why they deserve to take centre stage, having emerged tops in a comprehensive audition process. Spectators can expect an entirely fresh and vibrant sound bearing influences as diverse as the budding instrumentalists; hailing from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia.
The orchestra will be directed by leading Japanese musicians Osamu Matsumoto and Mayuko Katakura. Kuala Lumpur is the last stop in a six-city Southeast Asian tour that encompasses Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Manila, Singapore and Bangkok. The troupe will then travel to Japan next year for three shows. The journey is preceded by a two-week rehearsal camp in Tokyo.
In addition to jazz standards, the programme at all concert venues includes original compositions by the two music directors, as well as a medley of local folk classics.
The Asian Youth Jazz Orchestra is organised by the Japan Foundation Asia Center to provide a platform for young musicians to collaboratively perfect their craft and pursue new musical possibilities. This is in line with the Center’s aim of promoting cultural exchange within ASEAN by nurturing a sense of mutual understanding and coexistence.
