Japanese Drum Concert ? Beating & Blazing

The loud ?Beating and Blazing? symbolizes the launch of the Japan-Malaysia Friendship Year 2007, which is held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Malaysia.

The Japan Foundation and Embassy of Japan in Malaysia, in cooperation with Ministry of Culture, Art and Heritage, Istana Budaya, The Asano Foundation for Taiko Cultural Research, Japan Club Kuala Lumpur and JACTIM supported by Hotel Nikko proudly present you the most exciting yet fascinating Japanese drum performance by HONO-O-DAIKO, a renowned Japanese group of women drummers together with TOKYO DAGEKI DAN, a music performers group.

HONO-O-DAIKO consists of three women drummers who formed a TAIKO group in 1986. The group actively composing unique melody for Japanese drums performances. Most of their works are influenced by the beautiful nature around Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture, the place where the group was established. With the aim to broaden the public interest towards Japanese drums, they started to guide young drummers from all over Japan. At the same time, they also perform in overseas in order to introduce Japanese drums at the international level.

TOKYO DAGEKI DAN featuring Japanese drums or ?Taiko? founded by HIRANUMA Jin-ichi in 1995. It seeks the possibilities of Taiko through new sensitivity not limited to any style, performing attractive stages of Taiko ensemble.

HONO-O-DAIKO
HONO-O-DAIKO consists of three women drummers, JIGE Akemi, KINOSHITA Chieko and YAMADA Mizue. Since their establishment in 1986, the group actively composing unique melody for Japanese drums performances. Most of their works are influenced by the beautiful nature around Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture, the place where the group was established. With the aim to broaden the public interest towards Japanese drums, they started to guide young drummers from all over Japan. At the same time, they also perform in overseas in order to introduce Japanese drums at the international level.

In 1993, they performed at ?Hello Russia!?, an event produced by Kansai Yamamoto, which was held in Moscow. They performed in Mongolia in 1994, followed by performance in Senegal and participated in Anglem Music Festival, France in 1995. They had a joint performance with members of KODO in Cuba and Dominica in 1996. In the same year, they gave a special performance in Monaco during a ceremony that appointed Aichi Prefecture as the host for World Expo 2005.

After a performance at Suntory Hall Tokyo in 1999, they started a world tour to five countries including U.S.A. (The Carnegie Hall, New York), U.K. and France. They also participated in National Arts Festival organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan. In 2000, they held the second world tour and also performed at several places all around Japan. In the same year, they released an album entitled ?The Hono-o-Daiko Sound?. During the World Championship of Athletics held in Helsinki in 2005, they were selected to represent Japan for the performance during the opening ceremony. They also made a special appearance in the Grand Finale for the World Expo in Aichi in 2005. In 2006, they performed at the opening event of ?Kirin Cup Soccer?. With the pure and passionate performance by the women drummers, HONO-O-DAIKO is spreading their wings at domestic and international level.

TOKYO DAGEKI DAN
TOKYO DAGEKI DAN is a music performers group featuring Japanese drums or ?Taiko? founded by HIRANUMA Jin-ichi in 1995. It seeks the possibilities of Taiko through new sensitivity not limited to any style, performing attractive stages of Taiko ensemble.

The field of performance steadily spreads including ?Japan?s Taiko? at National Theater, various Taiko festivals, events at nationwide cultural facilities, art appreciation meetings at high schools, and other events as well as Taiko instruction for presently popular entertainment performance show ?The Convoy Show? and performing in a movie ?Kyoki no Sakura? by Toei featuring KUBOZUKA Yosuke as the main actor.

In June 1996, they performed to a capacity audience of 4,000 in the Prenery Hall of the Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia where they were received with great enthusiasm. (This was a special 15-member performance centered on Tokyo Dageki Dan.) Another Tokyo Dageki Dan project involved two of the members participating in ?THE WTO CLOSING SHOW? in Singapore in December 1996. France and Africa tour sponsored by Japan Foundation was held for a month in 1998. In July 1998,the group performed with the Korean National Dance Troupe at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in France, representing the host countries of the next World Cup Championships. In July-August 2000, Tokyo Dageki Dan performed the Europe tour including the U.K., Finland, Belgium and Germany (Hannover EXPO 2000).

In addition, performances at Moscow and Sankt Peterburg were also held as public opening events for ?Festival of Japanese Culture in Russia 2003? and the group is making a remarkable progress in Japan and overseas countries.
