The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, together with ASWARA Faculty of Theatre presents a demonstration and performance of kabuki, ?The Masseur and the Thief (Anma to Dorobo) ?.
Kabuki is a traditional form of Japanese theatre that originated about 400 years ago, the same period when William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet and Monteverdi composed the first opera in Italy. Kabuki is a cornerstone of Japanese contemporary theatre, music, dance and other forms of arts, which has been enjoyed as entertainment for the general public for many generations. It was designated as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2005.
?The Masseur and the Thief? is a famous contemporary comedy piece that involves comical interaction between the two characters. It is a performance filled with laughter, tears of sympathy and a surprising end. The demonstration that precedes the performance will introduce the audience to the traditional make up, dressing, and dancing used in Kabuki.
