Theme of the public lecture for this year will be ?Regional Economic Integration in East Asia and Japan?s FTA Policy?. East Asia has seen the emergence of regional economic integration in recent decades. Two main drivers of regional economic integration are market forces and institutional arrangement. In East Asia it was market forces that led to regional economic integration in the 1980s and 1990s, while the importance of institutional arrangement such as free trade agreements increased in the 21st century. This lecture reviews recent developments and special characteristics of regional economic integration in East Asia. It then discusses FTA policies of East Asian countries with a focus on Japan?s FTA policy and it comments on future prospects of a region-wide FTA.
