(HASHIMOTO Naoki / 2019 / 127min / P12)
Sayaka (Chise Niisu) is an 8 year-old girl who lives with her mother (Maki Sakai) and father (Kenichi Takitoh) on a coast road along which runs a red train. Unable to accept the death of her dog Lou while she was away on a school trip, Sayaka searches for him in all the places they used to go together.
One day in an empty field that Lou discovered, apparently once the site of a now abandoned rail line, she encounters another dog. It disappears, but a few days later she finds it in front of a local coffee shop. From Fuse (Yoshi Oida), the cantankerous-seeming old man who owns it, she learns that the dog found its way to the shop, where Fuse named it ‘Ruth’. It is a jazz coffee shop in a decades-old style, and we learn that many years ago Fuse lost his son, a death which he is still unwilling to accept.
One weekend Sayaka and Fuse go to the seaside. There they both find ‘something’. But what is it, and what is the ‘something’ they now should do?
