Murasaki: A Man Fascinated by Colour

(川瀬美香 KAWASE Mika/2002/77 min/Documentary)

Sachio Yoshioka is a Kyoto-based textile dyer renowned for procuring colours from organically grown plants and pure spring water, a technique increasingly rare in the modern age. As a result, his family studio –  established at the end of the Edo era (mid-19th century) ? creates hues surpassing any produced chemically in a laboratory.

Mika Kawase’s debut documentary provides an in-depth look at the daily workings of Yoshioka and his long-serving natural dyeing artisan, Fukuda Denshi; two members of a community intent on protecting nature, history and culture.
